Today I am writing about two things that caught my eye while going through various blogs.. One a very interesting chandelier and the other an amazing design on a staircase in the oddest place you could imagine.. Mumbai, India..

An Interesting Chandelier

Canadian design studio Castor has taken up-cycling to novel and ironic heights with a chandelier made entirely from burnt-out light bulbs. Designers Kei Ng and Brian Richer, who founded Castor in 2006 with the intention of recasting common and discarded materials in unexpected ways, keep things interesting with a range of products that straddle a line somewhere between art and design (and a dollop of theatre)—the obvious goal being to inject some much-needed fun into function. To that end, Castor’s Invisible Chandelier is an illuminating solution, a sumptuous collection of spent, seemingly useless, light bulbs forming a sparkling, light-emitting canopy overhead—every bit avant garde art piece as much as lighting solution. Invisible Chandelier and other lighting models by Castor are now available throughout the web...

A Staircase with a statement in Mumbai India

Attention-getting staircases aren’t exactly a novel concept in contemporary architecture, but, by any measure, this ultra refined apartment scheme offers up one of the more astonishing staircase designs in recent memory. Aiming to create vertical continuity between each of the 3 duplex apartments that comprise a 6-story family home in the city of Mumbai, India, the architectural firm of Arquitectura en Movimiento Workshop arrived at an ingenious visual device, both practical and esthetically compelling—with a staircase that’s as much art piece as segue.

Occupying the heart of each duplex’s floor plan, a composition of thick horizontal wood treads, gently bent at both ends, snakes upwards, connecting each floor to the one above, while creating a delineating element in the wide open spaces below. “It was designed as a sculpture in the space with more light and natural ventilation,” say the architects, of their esthetically weighty, but visually poetic design. An awe-inspiring creation, not surprisingly, that they’ve positioned to be visible from most anywhere in the apartment—and who could blame them for that?

Sydney's Apollo RESTAURANT....

“For me, Greek food is something you have at home. It’s not made to look refined,” says interior architect George Livissianis, who translated some of that simplicity and lack of pretension to his design for the Greek restaurant, Apollo, in Sydney, Australia. Livissianis, an Australian of Greek descent, was lucky enough to find fortuitous architectural details beneath the dropped ceilings and plasterboard of the existing space, and had the vision to know what to do with them.

“Our intent was to expose the carcass of the building and encourage the inherent Mediterranean feel of the existing arched windows, the hidden decorative ceilings and stripped finish of the existing walls.” Wabi-sabi rawness and a dearth of color—Livissianis refers to the color palette asdesaturated and dusty—recalls the rocky, sun-bleached Grecian landscape; and Artemidesuspension lighting and pale Thonet chairs inject contemporary elegance. Pretty refined, we’d say.

A Water filler

We’ve written about the lovely glass carafe and sustainable water filter designed by San Francisco-based Soma in a previous post, but it’s worth noting their current collaboration with Charity: Water, the non-profit group which has made clean drinking water for everyone its goal. Soma has launched this limited edition yellow filter to help raise funds for Charity: Water’s initiatives in Cambodia. For each Soma carafe and limited edition filter purchased, Soma will donate $12.50 towards providing clean water to every family in 3 Cambodian villages. If you weren’t tempted to buy a Soma water filtering system before, we hope you will be now. 

Interior designs Line Item Rack... 

Interior Design Magazine has announced its “Best of Year” 2013 Finalists in a broad range of categories that includes furniture, lighting, textiles and accessories. A finalist in the accessories category is Line, the elegant storage piece designed by North Carolina’s Davis Furniture—and no design enthusiast would argue the selection. An impossibly slim, wall-mounted slat of oak, walnut, or painted MDF, outfitted with 3 steel pegs and a separate pull-down lever, Line is a visually striking hold-all for clothes, coats or small accessories, whether used singly or in a group. The only conundrum we see is in having to choose amongst the gorgeous selection of colors.

  

Mexican Hospitality...

Anyone in the mood for the vibrant brand of Modernism exemplified by Mexican masters Luis Barragan and Ricardo Legorreta will have to look somewhere besides Mexico City’s new Distrito Capital boutique hotel, a ravishing Modernist nirvana with nary a nod to Mexican culture in sight.

French architect Joseph Dirand, whose previous hospitality venture in Mexico produced the austereHotel Habitat Monterrey, oversaw the interior design at Distrito Capital, and it shows. As with Habitat Monterrey, Dirand’s European flair is prominently on display, with furnishings by great Danes Saarinen and Aalto taking center stage.

Workspace Design in a Comfortable Home for the Workaholic

Claims and higher workloads, make us to be quick and responsive follow the development of the world. This often makes the time available in the office felt more narrow and less so it takes extra time to complete the job. To overcome these problems, need to be handled aroom in the house to meet the needs to handle and resolve work problems. It takes an extra space that makes us feel calm, orderly, and comfortable in order to finish the job. “There are many ways you can do to make the work space in the house. We can choose between several alternatives to accommodate the need for work space.To obtain a high level of privacy, you should use a permanent wall and away from space that are active and full of activities, such as family room or kids playroom. Better yet, if we can put on the second floor, close to the bedroom or den and library. For furniture we can choose only to use a table when combined with other rooms. Or we can simply use floating tables that are embedded in the wall so the room can still feel spacious and airy. If the room is still possible, we can add the credenza as a place of supporting equipment such as printers and fax machines.

If there is still another space, then we can put a cabinet or shelf to store books supporting the work. In addition, we can equip it with a single sofa to a comfortable reading room and useful if we want to relax a little bit after working hard. Other supporting equipment, can we put the music player to feel more relaxed while working. Also can we put an aquarium for ornamental fish as well as landscape painting or other images that could cause the relaxed atmosphere. “To be more comfortable, we can put photos with family members as well as recording a very impressive trip for us,” said Vishnu. As a material, can be used as a wood parquet floor  to get warm atmosphere of the room. Can also use marble or granite material in order to get the impression of luxury and elegance. If not possible, we use a new ceramic floor. As a wall covering material, we can use the wallpaper, painted walls, wood panels as a backdrop desks and cabinets and a built in wooden cabinets to maximize space utilization. Color painting one wall with different materials also may be used to avoid the impression of monotonous and boring.
